It is a residential home for women who do not have adequate support from whanau or partners and are often dealing with a number of complex issues in addition to their pregnancy, which can range from transience and drug abuse to domestic violence and mental illness. It has operated in Christchurch since February 1993 and is the only residential facility/home of its type in Canterbury
Holly House provides settled, family like accommodation and support to young mothers till they have their babies and while they learn how to safely care for their new charges. Professional staff, assisted by volunteers, are present 24 hours a day
It also provides skills-based education programmes, counselling and mentoring for mothers living in-house, those who have moved out into the community, and those are unable to live in at the facility.
Each young woman works on identified goals and issues and Holly House provides education on:
Awareness of cultural issues and whanau development , Individual counselling , Budgeting skills/wise spending , Parenting skills and safety issues , Day to day care of babies , Child development , Safe sex and contraception , Health care and nutrition , Education and employment , Living together co-operatively , Involving the father of the baby , Life skills and independent living skills , Communication skills , Cooking on a budget , Fitness and self defence , Recreation and leisure opportunities , Planning for independence , Strengthening families, Drug-ARM programme, Barnardos Parent in Charge Programme.
Also there is the Holly House Community Reconnections Programme which aims to provide practical, social and emotional support for the women after the child is born and the mother is re-entering the community. Click here for more information
